Basically you just assumed he confessed and made that into an unsubstantiated fact.

Oh.. it's possible that he didn't confess and it's just a ruse leaked to the press to pressure his father and other associates who might be sweating how much he's telling the Feds.

But that confession "leak" emerge rather early in the investigation..

I guess we'll just have to wait and see whether they indict him.

What's your view on Hasan? I guess he didn't kill 13 people in cold blood either? And don't give me that "innocent until proven guilty". There were plenty of witnesses and a conviction now is matter of due process. His only other alternative is to be found insane, which I can't see many militant muslims electing to do if they truly believe what they did was an act of faith.
