i feel bad for those young soldiers and bad for our country that we have such feeble minded leaders. I dont see how this is not vietnam all over again. except that here we have a country that is run under warlords and tribes with lots of hiding places. the border with pakistan is porous and the people who lived there were there long before there was a border and so of course they dont recognize it. The notion of building an islamic security and military force to fight a more fundamental movement in a backward corrupt country that is way spread out in order to protect american interests somehow doesnt click with me. I think the more likely scenario is that the taliban will lay low, inflitrate the security and military forces and as soon as our numbers get low enough take them over, but now they will have had the benefit of much better technology and financing and will be laughing at the american infidels all the way to the bank.
Somehow everyone in washington thinks that everyone in the world wants to behave like an american with democratic values, and freedom for all. This is just like the delusion that if we give enough money to banks they will lend to poor credit risks and lift unemployment forgetting that they can borrow at zero and buy risk free government paper at 3.5% all day long so why should they lend. duh!

The problems, (and thus the solutions to the problems), lie mostly in PAKISTAN... where the Taliban was CREATED in 1988, and where al Qaeda has ALWAYS (& still) sheltered and plotted.

There is no possible way to 'win' anything next door so long as Pak succors and provides sanctuary, support, re-arming and finance for the fighters.

Bush either never could see that plain fact, (or else he never had the stomach for the fight).
