Right James,

"Spot On" as our cousins across the pond would have it. Huawei has been around since 1988 and in the just ended third quarter of 09 has become the second largest (in terms of revenue-based market share) telecommunications equipment vendor globally, outrunning all European contenders save first place Ericsson.

Of more import is the stunning momentum Huawei has shown; While industry leader Ericsson's market share remained flat at 31.6%, Huawei's market penetration almost doubled from 10.9% to 20.1%; 3rd and 4th place Nokia-Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent lost market share BUT running hard, yet still far behind, in fifth place globally-fellow Chinese contender- ZTE which increased its year over year penetration by almost 50%.

While coming up on the rail, only Japanese carrier reluctance and North American political caution has so far impeded Huawei's break for the finish line. Huawei has only, yet, a 12% share penetration of the American market, impeded in North America, where last year it was barred, for reasons of U.S. national security, from acquiring 3Com. (Ericsson , while stagnant globally, was able to acquire the earthly remains of the once mighty Nortel.)
