India has recycling down to the last little bit.

One day, a dozen years ago, I watched a large open rubbish bin be filled and emptied. People would bring rubbish and chuck it in. Women and animals would come along and empty it out.

The recycling pecking order was

women
cows
dogs
cats
crows
rats
and smaller things I couldn't see...

Once a dog had the temerity to challenge a woman by snarling at her. It got a can thrown in its face and a lesson in who had right of way in the recycling process.

I didn't see monkeys, but if there were some, I guess they'd fit in around dog level, but probably just above them. Actually, now that I think back, I don't recall cats. Maybe I'm making up the cat part.

The cows and women weren't in dispute over what they wanted so there wasn't really any argument there, but I dare say the women were top and would push in front of cows if needs be. Women wanted cans, bottles, paper etc. Cows wanted comestibles.

It's a shame to see such low economic recycling. It would be better for everyone to be so rich that all the junk could simply be chucked on a big heap a couple of kilometres high which would be an excellent viewing platform and launching pad for paragliding.
