Yes but many people survived the same experiences and did not become alcoholics.

You have people today doing the same thing who have had gifted lives, look around at Hollywood.

I have had at least 2-3 extended family members go through very horrible existences with booze and they never saw combat.

I agree that there may be many people who would not become substance abusers if they did not survive combat. But as you can see I have had this argument before. Addiction is allot more complicated than saying some person was like this because of some experience or condition.

WWII veterans were not likely to get any decent psychological counseling and I dont think treatment for alcoholism was all that effective back then either.

Guadalcanal was probably one of the most difficult experiences in WWII especially for those who landed in the first wave in August of 1942. They were abandoned for several months and left with little supplies. When did your father land?

Your dad was part of a generation that knew sacrifice and commitment to this nation. Without their sacrifices who knows what the world would be like today.

I plan on visiting a memorial in PNG which requires a brutal hike across the Kokoda trail. This battle was going on the same time more or less as Guadalcanal. Lets see how many injuries I have to work through before I am fit enough for this trek.
