A viable Afghanistan does nothing for US interests.

I understand why so many people think this is a bad decision, but this is an absurd claim.

The US derives quite a bit from a relatively stable world and a stable Afghanistan would contribute quite a bit to that. Beyond denying Al-Qaeda a sanctuary, it would lessen the pressure on Pakistan. A country with nukes is not one we that we want to see become another failed state.

One thing I will agree with you on is that the US shoulders way too much of the burden of insuring stability around the world.
