Government entities are not inherently good or bad. I actually think that the SEC has shown more teeth in last 12 month and may become a better run institution.

Same with health care reform. Germany and France (which have the most expensive health care system in Europe) can run their system at 10-11% of GNP with a better average outcome, while the US is currently at a cost of about 16% of GNP. However that does not mean that a public/national system would necessarily cure the ails of the US health care system, it just depends on the framework. A lot of things would need to change and all stakeholders would need to make sacrifices to make the the system work better and more economical.
