I'll give you a clear example. Natural variability. Did you even bother to look at the heat map of global temperature anomalies I posted for Oct'09? It clearly showed that the US was a cooling anomaly, while most of the rest of the globe except N and S poles were warming! It's called natural variability. It doesn't mean the trend is broken. If you want to see a great video that takes temp anomaly data from the late 1800's through 2007, check this out. Blue is below mean temps and yellow and red is above: data.giss.nasa.gov
