I'll give you a clear example. Natural variability. Did you even bother to look at the heat map of global temperature anomalies I posted for Oct'09? It clearly showed that the US was a cooling anomaly, while most of the rest of the globe except N and S poles were warming!

It's called natural variability. It doesn't mean the trend is broken.
