Burke is a master at capturing the place where his novels are set. I can tell pretty much where the scene is, if I've been there.

The only think I don't like is the drunks. He keeps them for company, I think.

He captures Montana, but I think the imagery in his later books is not as vivid as in the earlier books. My brother-in-law said he thought he might be using a ghost writer. I've noticed this with other writers - Steven King and John Grisham being two. The earlier books are better. Once they get on the treadmill and start churning out a book a year, the quality of the writing goes down. I'd be interested to hear what Smoothsail has to say about this.
