Dave,
I have been lurking and learning here for the past two weeks, this is my first post here but I do have some info on in person. Tuesday the 28th I wanted to make two or three small stock purchases and could not get through on Waterhouse Webbroker. The screen was up but it was so slow, mostly frozen, I believe I only got one or two real time quotes all day. Some of my friends managed to make one trade by waiting 15 minutes or so for each step on the screen. I realized that I could be in deep dodo if I had a need to sell etc. so I made a test run to local branch Waterhouse 20 minutes away. Judging from the congestion on the net I thought maybe there would be a crowd there. Turned out that local branch, only open a few months, is quite small, only three employees I could see, who were very very busy on the phones! Within a few minutes however I had a quotron to use and a phone to the "broker?", sitting 30 feet from me, that actually worked. They did not want to take a written order, I had to use the phone, even though the gentleman I was talking to was sitting so close. I should have waited to get confirmation of the trade for a real test for the next "crisis". Actually, they seemed a bit surprised to see a real live customer!
Now if you are in line ahead of me next time I'll be p---off!<g>
