The interference on airplanes from cell phones is minimal. The reason they want them off is to minimize distracting and irritating behaviors. At a decent altitude signals are not generally received.

My brother was on a flight a few years ago and he said he sees the pilot or copilot walking down the aisle looking from side to side until he gets to a kid by Jay. He stops and chats and asks how long the kid has been playing his game and then asks him to turn it off. He walks back to the cockpit and then comes back and tells the kid to start playing again. Returns to the cockpit and comes back after a few minutes and says ok, shut that off and leave it off. It was dorking up their navigational computer.
