For some reason hummingbirds will stick around all winter here as long as you keep the feeders full. Not all of them, but a few stay behind. I have a theory via observations I've made of a feeder that hangs outside the window next to my desk. I notice when a new bird arrives..........their condition, coloring, markings..........and I believe this Summer I had birds from three separate broods show up.

These new birds are always tiny, and skinny. A new one showed up in late Oct.........a beautiful little male.......and he's still around getting fatter and fatter. IOW Hummingbirds have multiple broods throughout the summer all the way in to mid to late fall. The late birds will stay around as long as there is something to eat. I had one fellow show up in late December last year. The temps were in single digits for days and days, and he practically lived on the feeder. I'd bring it in at night so it didn't freeze and he'd be on it before I could get it hung in the morning. He disappeared towards the end of January.

I called him lucky.
