Gibson is replaced by Stewart Nelson ........ Novell Shuffles Management, Preps Java Plan (11/02/97; 1:38 p.m. EDT) By Barbara Darrow and Shawn Willett Computer Reseller News (http://techweb.cmp.com/crn/issues/760/../761/) Novell has shuffled its management ranks yet again and plans a new Java-centric framework to revitalize its IntranetWare line. Out is Denise Gibson, who was senior vice president for the Internet Products Group, company executives said. Gibson, who resigned in early October, was the target of a civil lawsuit and complaints to Utah state authorities by former Novell exec Jeff Merkey. Merkey had accused Gibson of sexual harrassment. Moving into Gibson's position is Stewart Nelson, former vice president of Novell's Collaboration Services Group. Nelson, who came to Novell via WordPerfect Corp., will oversee all product development. Nelson has been the leader of Novell's Groupwise messaging product. Other Groupwise managers also gained ground including Paul Smart, promoted to take Nelson's place; and Ed McGarr, who was vice president of marketing for collaboration services and now has responsibility for all of marketing, sources said. In addition to the reorganization, Provo-based Novell plans to introduce later this year a "Java-based framework" for server-based application development, according to documents posted on Novell's Web site. The framework will include a Java SDK-compliant development environment with hooks into Novell services such as calendaring, messaging, telephony, management, internationalization and directory. The directory interface, dubbed the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), already has been announced by Sun Microsystems Inc., Mountain View, Calif., and Novell. The others are being worked on by the two companies, according to the document. "Leveraging their network services through Java is a good move for Novell. They still have a strong directory services story," said Clay Rider, analyst at the Zona Group, Redwood City, Calif. "However, if the question is will someone actually buy a Novell environment for this--probably not," he added. It appears that many of them are internal candidates. I would have preferred to see some specific selections (outside of Novell) from CEO Schmidt. Especially for the new products "Internet technology" division. Maybe there are more announcements to follow?? (What about a new CFO?) Bio for Stuart Nelson: corp.novell.com.au EKS
