Ellsberg, symbolically, represents all that could and did go wrong with a war plan. Furthermore, he knew from his firsthand experience in the Mekong Delta as a 1Lt in the marines what and how severe a challenge we would encounter there.

He learned it all at the knee of one of the finest anti- guerrella combat minds we ever produced--John Paul Vann.
