Rather had a responsibility to be open to the possibility of the forgery. Instead, he was so stuck on his objective of destroying GWB, he didn't even use reasonable measures to validate the claims.

Was it intentional, was it accidental, was it merely incompetent, I don't know which. But the result was the same: A person was smeared with a lie and the buck has to stop somewhere.

If my job is to be an unbiased reporter of fact and I allow lies to be spread through my own incompetence, I think the buck stops with me. Due to negligence or absolute bias I allow the lie to be spread, I think that makes me responsible.

And so, too, does it make Dan Rather responsible.
