There's a whole lot of gaming the system by the doctors too. I went in to get a lipoma removed and asked what it would cost since we have a large deductible. The doc went through the fee schedules and said, "here we go, tissue removal.. $640, plus out patient visit... $320. We code it tissue removal because if we code it lipoma removal, they don't allow hardly anything." Now this is an office visit where they put some local anesthesia on the area and scrape out the lipoma with a knife. Takes about 20 minutes. So it cost me $960 for this 20 minutes of work. What bullshit-- I decided to live with the lipoma.
