Rose, if you put a cup of rice and a cup of water together, that's more than double the weight of the rice because a cup of water is heavier than a cup of rice. Rice is more dense than water, [it sinks], but the air between the grains makes up for that.

When you cook the cup of rice and cup of water, all of the water soaks into the rice. So the wet cooked rice weighs the same as the dry rice and cup of water.

The cooked volume of wet rice is slightly less than two cups because the water has replaced the air between the grains of rice.

That's a sophisticated engineering analysis of the situation but you should be able to follow it. A cup of water is about 10% heavier than a cup of rice.

Tofu is toxic!! But I was thinking an egg should be added. Also, mine normally gets some Kikkoman soya sauce, turmeric, fresh basil, maybe some parsley and other herbs I find in the garden. Spinach, corn and other things can find their way in depending on what's around and what's chap. Pieces of salmon mixed in, cooked by residual heat is a bonus. But these are government "workers" we are discussing, being provided for by the producers.
