I don't disagree with this, and I'm coming to this conversation late, but I thought I'd point out that modern planes can land automatically. The system that enables this is called autoland, cleverly enough.

The ability to do this depends on the airport having the proper kind of equipment, and the pilot still has to do things like lower the landing gear, set flaps, and program the autoland system to select the correct runway. But once that is done, autoland can and routinely does bring the plane in for a landing. After landing, the pilot has to hit the reverse thrusters and handle all taxiing maneuvers.

Autoland is required in some circumstances, such as very low visibility conditions. Also, pilots are required to use autoland at specified intervals in order to ensure it is working.

I'm sure pilots are very alert during the autoland process, and are ready to take over the controls at any moment.
