The devaluation of the the US dollar really is a big concern. In real dollar terms, Canadians with US dollars denominated assets have lost as much as 30 percent on their investments due to the devaluation of the US dollar in recent years.

The problem with the Canadian market is that choices are a lot more limited. If you are not investing in a utility or telecommunications company the company's record of dividend payment is pretty limited. Income trust though they may have high payout can be impacted severely when they convert to corporation again in 2011. Yellow Pages for example had to cut their dividend in half due to the switch to a corporation. A lot of the income trust seem to have unsustainable models. There seems to be no way for investors on the street to understand the impact of a conversion of an individual company back to a corporation.
