That relates to Presidential politics only I think. There's a lot more going on.

Arkansas went for the Republican candidate every Presidential election since 1972 EXCEPT for 1976 (Carter over Ford) and 1992 & 1996 when Clinton was running.

The Democratic party moved to the left in 1972 and suffered a blowout .... people who'd never voted Republican before did then and since then the Democrats haven't been able to elect a President that wasn't a southerner (and sold as a moderate Democrat) until Obama.
