Copenhagen: support for a global tax on shipping and aviation grows
telegraph.co.uk

A plan to tax bunker fuel used in shipping, which accounts for 5pc of all global carbon dioxide emissions and 80pc of world trade, has found most support among the developed countries in the run-up to the conference.

Developing nations have been concerned that it could hit their industries, but more have been won round in recent days by the suggestion that proceeds would go towards the climate aid fund. Airlines are set to enter the European emissions trading scheme in 2012, but shipping has so far been excluded.

Snowshoe comment: I'll be interested to see if they pull this off. Are there any existing examples of global taxes?
