AMD's corporation is now built on competing and succeeding in the Intel look-a-like business.

If this fails, they will have to re-trench to a much smaller operation.

Intel & HP have completed the architectural definition, logic design and essentially all of the circuit design. They are now in layout (actually "drawing" the transistors and interconnect) and I would expect that an April - May, 1998 target date is set for "tape-out".

In parallel with this effort is the technology development program for the 0.18 micron process - which clearly needs to achieve some "milestones" by tape-out time.
