Dark fiber will be needed for speed at that level. Servers and storage devices are just begin to catch up with the current 1 gig speed. Demand for 2 and 4 gig will not be here for a while. What good would that do if the throughput would be only 40% with a super-fast switch. May be late 1998, this scenario may change. All IMHO.

Would you expect the higher speed switches (2 or 4 gig) to affect latency? That is, if the latency of a 4 gig switch was the same as the Mk. II, would the higher throughput make much difference for a SAN?
Would you trade off higher latency for higher speed?

George,

From the website you posted earlier on GE test results, per port throughput was less than 200mbps . This just showed that GE is hardly living up to its name.
