If it's story that docs get 30-50K for an amputation, no I obviously don't.....that is a stupid claim.

Yup - Obama is an idiot.

Obama vs Shep

Obama:

But, if that same diabetic ends up getting their foot amputated, that's $30,000, $40,000, $50,000, immediately, the surgeon is reimbursed.

Shep:
it's story that docs get 30-50K for an amputation, no I obviously don't.....that is a stupid claim

Finally, I agree with you Shep, Obama did make a stupid claim.

>> Blue Cross Blue Shield says the average cost for tonsil removal is about $5500.00

The surgery fee reimbursement for a tonsillectomy (usually performed by an Otolaryngologist) ranges between $180 and $300, depending on the insurance company. This is a "global" billing, which means all follow up visits/care for the global period (90 days in the case of a tonsillectomy) are included in the basic fee.

The problem with Obama's claim, and the reason it was outrageous, is that it reflected total ignorance of how the system works. This is the guy who is supposed to have been orchestrating the overhaul of our health care system.

Apparently, he does not understand there is a comprehensive referral process during any step of which an unnecessary surgery will be stopped, and that the surgeon does NOT stand to make that kind of money from ANY surgery. It was a stupid claim.

Obama MAY understand the contingent fee arrangements of attorneys. But he clearly doesn't know SHIT about how providers are compensated in the health care system.
