"The question is:...immaterial in a material universe?"

Only to the extent to which you can say, 'in it, not of it.'

"aspects to thought"

Ideas are immaterial and ideas are aspects of thought. Ideas are referent ...

"(or anything else)"

Any thing can be known by the ideas which represent the thing. Anything else (immaterial) to be known, or at least communicated, would do so by referring to the ideas which represent the thing, such as things having to do with soul, morality, imagination, fiction, math, time, etc.
