These are public officials. There is a law in place saying that these are not private conversations, but a matter of public record. This was true before they came into office, and it is still true. They tried to evade the law. Which is very newsworthy. Although I will grant you that Republicans trying to evade laws isn't as newsworthy as it was in the past...
