Tax on university students - One fairly reasonable view of the proposed tax on students goes like this -

The students use city services - police, fire, water, sanitation, welfare, etc. but do not contribute any revenue, so they have been carried by the rest of the city.

The city should have done this a number of years ago.

The surrounding area has 2.5 million people, but the city only has 350,000 - so 100,000 students is a big load, even is most are not in the city itself.

The mayor talks about funding pensions, but the city did not get sufficient money for the past 20 years.

Pittsburgh used to be headquarters for major corporations, but most of them left years ago.

We will be seeing some desperate tax measures soon.
