I'm sure students will generate some taxes -

but not enough for many reasons -

Students don't have lots of money, so this limits how much sales tax will be collected.

Most of them will arrive freshman year with most of their clothes, and they will often buy their clothes when they are at home (with help from parents)

Student housing is usually low end housing, so that limits how much property tax they will pay. Student housing also tends to be crowded, so even less property tax per capita.

Many students don't have cars, which reduces the gas tax source.

It is hard to extract money from kids living on top ramen noodles.
