Drug companies don't keep their data and the details of their studies secret from the FDA. Their drugs are tested both before and after approval. In the areas you're bringing up - drug development and geophysical science, there is rigorous testing against the real world over and over and over again. Furthermore, the developers/scientists don't simply present a result and say there it is, its settled. Everything about their work is examined critically.
