hello, Paul,
from the reports DELL released(DELL last quarterly report & September news release report about increasing share buyback to 125 mil), they have at least repurchased:

68-59.3=8.7 million shares this quarter, i.e. between 8/19 to 9/12

I would assume they bought a little bit more last week. my estimate is around 10 mil shares repurchased this quarter.

Regards,

Ruduee

from DELL last quarterly report on 8/19/97:

Dell generated $289 million in cash from operations, increasing its cash and marketable securities to $1.5 billion at the close of the quarter. This allowed the company to spend approximately $200 million to repurchase an additional 5.7 million shares of Dell stock. Since its share repurchase program was initiated 18 months ago, Dell has repurchased 59.3 million shares and has contractual arrangements covering another 27 million shares, totaling 86.3 percent of 100 million shares authorized by its Board of Directors.

from DELL press release on 9/12/97:

The amount of shares to be purchased and the timing of purchases will be based on a number of factors, including the price of Dell's stock, the level of stock issuances under the employee stock plans and market conditions. To date, the company has repurchased about 68 million shares under the program, and has secured contracts to purchase an additional 23 million shares with exercise dates through January 1999.

Paul - Yes, I too can not get a good handle on the #of shares
that will be used to calculate earnings. Another question
I have is this. How many shares OS will there be once
all 125M have been repurchased? My guess is ~300M becuase
some of the repurchased shares go back to employees as
options and other benifits. This is very difficult to
track.

Let's hope your EPS number is closer than mine<g>
