Hikers are either more irresponsible or simply greater numbers - they even get lost in places like Iran and other "friendly" places. Technology like gps and SPOT trackers that send 911 calls are getting over used now days in place of actual skills - the mindset of "if I get in trouble I'll just call for rescue" is getting too expensive. Hikers today go places they would never attempted before since they lack the skills - safe in the knowledge someone will save them if they get into trouble. In defense of hunters - they have to drag out their kill which makes such adventures off the path less likely - but does not absolve them of stupidty either.
