Given the amount of coal, tars, gas, shale and oil there is, it seems unlikely that alternative fuels will be needed before history has made some major paradigm shifts such as reaching Peak People combined with technological transitions.

It costs more to process those fuels. With hot fusion coming 10 to 40 years cheap electricity may make hydrogen fuel cells cheaper to operate. As powerful as a strong electric motor accelerates a car, I hope it comes sooner rather than later.
