Exactly what you are insuring isn't relevant. That was just another red herring that he likes to throw out to avoid actually discussing an issue.

Not just that, but there is no absolute requirement to buy auto liability insurance. The requirement only kicks in when you register a vehicle. Its not "a government mandate to have insurance", its a "government requirement to buy insurance in order to register a vehicle".

That fact, and the fact that its a state requirement not a federal one, make it far less constitutionally dubious than the health care insurance requirement.
