The US Govt. is helping the Indonesian Govt. for the following reasons:- 1. the financial help will help stabilise the currency and stockmarket turmoil in S. E. Asia. The US Govt.cannot afford to allow this turmoil to go on unchecked because it is feared that overtime the instability or so-called Asian Contagion will be exported to the US markets; 2. providing aid gives the US Govt. an upperhand. It can demand and enforce reformist conditions; 3. the US Govt. does not want the S. E. Asian nations to nudge closer to China and Japan. I believe the US Govt. has other self-serving motives. With the collapse of communism, the US Govt. is not in a hurry to help the S.E. Asian nations. It will wait for the begging to start. Then it will give help with reformist strings attached, as in the case of Indonesia.
