Recommend Volvo C30 has been the Swedish automaker's attempt at a stylish small car. Its techniques could be valuable to China's Geely.
CAPTIONBy Henrik Ottosson/VolvoAs General Motors makes a last-ditch attempt to find a buyer for Saab, Ford confirmed today that it's giving the green light to sale of Volvo cars to Chinese automaker Geely.

Ford, in its finest legalese, says in a brief statement that "all substantive commercial terms relating to the potential sale of Volvo Car Corporation have been settled between Ford and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group" and that a definitive sales agreement will be signed in the next three months. That would pave the way for the transfer in the spring if the Swedish and Chinese government still give their okay. What's in it for Ford?:

The prospective sale would keep Volvo's car operation alive and allow Ford to continue to Focus on focusing on its core Ford and Lincoln brands (notice we didn't say Mercury, which will forever be on the bubble) in the U.S.. It has already dumped Aston Martin, Land Rover and Jaguar.

Geely is a successful automaker in fast-growing China, world's hottest auto market. Chinese automakers have shown huge success, but have had trouble making their way to the highest levels of quality. Owning Volvo could give Geely the education it needs to break into Europe and the U.S.
