This volality is great! It was a given that the market will be UP bigtime today, given the Indonesian bailout news on Friday. Now there should be some snowball effect and the exuberance will continue a bit. What is important is how the market closes at the end of the week. At that time we can see whether classic distribution has occurred, or whether quality stocks are backfilling and consolidating to form a strong base. The non-quality stocks are doomed.

As for how I pick stocks ... technological basis and the potential for the company to have a strategic role in our lives are the drivers for mid/long term trades or investments. For instance I traded CSCO and WLFT in '93 when they were high-fliers ... people barely knew what a router was; in '94 CSCO became an investment because it was just a matter of time before the world had to be connected by these router gadgets. I also look for situations in existing companies when they introduce a new product that will make a quantum difference in the way businesses/people operate ... quantum difference equates to quantum jump in prices. Some simple examples, when INTC introduced the Pentium architecure and MSFT introduced Win 95 ... and biotechs with a strong pipeline especially with a good likelihood of successful phase III trials.

Technicals to determine entry points, especially for short/mid term trades. I review fundamentals on a quarterly basis for all trades/investments that I still hold.

On flipping stocks/options ... that's a different beast.
