You're Dad made out like a bandit. All he paid in plus interest came back in less than 2 years. So for 21 years he's been getting a freebie.

And the value of those benefits remained constant?

No one is arguing that they won't pay benefits. They will pay the dollar amount of the benefits but the inflation adjusted value of those dollars will be significantly lower than they are today, just as they were in your Dad's time.
