Republican Committee Member Does Not Welcome Congressman Into Party

Venton Blandin Reporter

December 23, 2009
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The story of 5th District Congressman Parker Griffith switching political parties is still the talk of the town. The new republican is obviously catching heat from the democrats, but also from some republicans.

A member of one republican committee in the 5th district stood in front of cameras to say Congressman Parker Griffith is not welcome into his party.

"I am astonished this morning to hear that the democrat who had been occupying the seat of the 5th Congressional District has very suddenly decided that he is a conservative, and wants to run on a republican ticket," said 5th Congressional Republican Committee Member Hugh McInnish.

McInnish looked square into the cameras expressing his displeasure with Congressman Parker Griffith.

McInnish is now wanting to get the attention of some republicans to talk about Congressman Griffith's entrance into the GOP.

"I think we should take a close look at that," added McInnish.

The Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party is Mike Hubbard. Hubbard was quoted in Wednesday's Huntsville Times saying, "All is forgiven."

"I question whether he has the authority to forgive him. After all, the state chairman does not reside in this district," added McInnish.

McInnish told WHNT NEWS 19 the 5th District Congressman represents the people who live in the 5th district. He believes the people of the district do the talking.

"I think if forgiveness is to be granted, it is we who should give that forgiveness," added McInnish.

McInnish shared WHNT NEWS 19 a letter to his committee's chairman, James Elbert Peters. The letter suggests, not all is forgiven in the case of the former democratic congressman.

He's also asking the chairman to do something.

"I would urge that we not exclude the question of barring the democrat from our ticket. People may not realize it. We have that power, and we have that right. I think we should seriously consider that," added McInnish.

McInnish says his biggest problem with Congressman Parker Griffith's switch is Congressman Griffith is not a republican. He also says the congressman is not a conservative.

McInnish says Congressman Griffith has fought republicans tooth and nail through the years.

"He doesn't deserve to come in and suddenly decide he is a republican, and run against people who have been good republicans over the years," added McInnish.

WHNT NEWS 19 did ask Hugh McInnish what Congressman Parker Griffith could do to make him welcome him into the republican party.

McInnish's responded by saying, "nothing."
