Virtually every empire in the world has been built by the sword. Romans', Muslims', Chinese', Russians', British, French, Spanish, whatever...they were all built by the sword. The Spanish, like almost everyone else, appealed to religion to pillage the Latin America. Shall we say that it was Christianity's fault? It is the nature of war to use all the means necessary to achieve your goals. Religion is just one of many tools to achieve the ends.
