I thought that once the structure was compromised, the plane would probably rip apart or become uncontrollable

Nadine,
I think you have that right.
I just don't think 3 ounces placed between a man's legs and groin will compromise an aircraft's structure in any catastrophic way.

Picture it:

Plan lands safely on the ground, but due to smoke inhalation, the pilot is unconscious and the co-pilot takes over. The plane skids off the runway and comes to a stop on the grass. Someone manages to open a door and black smoke billows out while coughing and wheezing passengers crowd the doorway and jump to save their lives before a ramp can be put into place. Many of the passengers break arms and legs in the process. Television cameras are recording every single second and capturing gruesome pictures of charred and burned human flesh. The terror on the faces of the people is clearly visible. Jackets, shirts, pants, dresses are on fire and rescue crews are frantically doing everything they can for the victims. In 15 minutes the black cloud can be seen all the way from Dearborn and Windsor.
