Gary, did you know I read an article last April that said TOYOTA was thinking about a move into the telecommunications industry! Yes, Toyota. They are very long term (30+ years) strategic thinkers. They are in no hurry right now. The reason CPQ, Ericsson, LU, NT and others want into networking is the same strategic reason. Networking is the future of the world, and will be one of the highest growth sectors for many years to come. Strategic thinking companies are always looking to secure their place in future business and not be subject to the vagaries of one particular industry and today's products. If CPQ wants to diversify, what better area to move into? It's not like they were moving into retailing or something, their current business is closely related.
