Compaq Beat Toshiba
For September Sales
Of Notebook PCs

HOUSTON -- Compaq Computer Corp.'s strong September performance in retail outlets pushed the company past Toshiba Corp. for the first time in total monthly U.S. sales of notebook computers, according to a market research firm.

The results suggest Toshiba's longtime notebook market leadership is being challenged, said Matt Sargent, analyst at Computer Intelligence in San Diego. Because of strong sales earlier in the year, Toshiba is still expected to be No. 1 in annual sales, he said.

Compaq's strength in September came after it released new products in August and because of a marketplace anamoly in which retail sales of notebook units exceed sales through resellers that mainly serve businesses.

In the overall notebook market, Compaq's September market share was 28.8%, compared with 25.3% for Toshiba and 18.2% for International Business Machines Corp. In retail sales, Compaq had a 42.4% market share and Toshiba had a 24.3% share.

In September 1996, Toshiba led the overall U.S. notebook market with a 41.5% share, followed by IBM at 19.8% and Compaq at 17.3%.

Steve,

Where did you find that 10-11% sales for CPQ in the fareast? I can't find it in the quarterly report.
