A claim I've heard before (but ever without any quantifying evidence to support it).

Regardless of whether such a claim is false or true (and, even if there was some degree of 'decline' in deposit base by the end of the 1970s... how slight was it? Was it in any way significant? And would it have self-healed with Volker's much HIGHER INTEREST RATES in '80, '81?)

However that fact set might be developed, it REMAINS TRUE that (PRIOR to the Congress & WH's rule-changing) the industry was SAFE, still profitable, and there was no bubble whatsoever in their prices... and little to no risk to the taxpayers.
