30 Dec 2009 14:45 GMT DJ Germany's BGA Sees Exports Rising Up To 10% In 2010

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)--German exports will become a driver of economic growth again in 2010, with an expected rise of up to 10%, Anton Boerner, president of the Association of German Exporters and Wholesalers, or BGA, said Wednesday.

German exports will thrive mainly owing to demand from Asia, according to a BGA survey carried out among member companies and published Wednesday, Boerner said. German exports to the European Union are also expected to pick up, while trans-Atlantic exports will stagnate, he said.

Whether Germany has retained its position as the world's largest exporter ahead of China in 2009 "is still open," Boerner said. Exports of both countries may have declined by some 18% in 2009, thus the dollar exchange rate will tip the scales, he added.

"Our biggest rival is, however, our most dynamic client," Boerner said, adding that China with its demand in infrastructure, machinery and green technology offers good export opportunities for several years, just as India, Brazil and Russia do.

Despite the promising signs, it will take German exports at least until 2012 to regain their previous strength, Boerner said.
