We engineered them for higher yield. We didn't care that it also restricted their range, that wasn't a parameter. Are we doing so right now?

Thanks to political confusion and scientific illiteracy - GM wheat has not taken the same course as corn and soybeans. Warming weather would allow planting wheat in April and grow faster than in cold years when planting doesn't occur until May - cold weather can account for a 40% drop in yield year to year. So without GM and if AGW is true - or if planet temps are increasing it may actually be a net benefit for wheat production at least for US farmers.
