Dwight: Not that this has anything to do with 99.99% of this thread, but you criticized tekgk's positive mention of the new gas/electric hybrid car from Toyota without realizing that it doesn't require users to recharge the batteries. The idea is that gas internal combustion engines can be very efficient and clean once the car is moving along at a decent speed - most of the pollution and fuel consumption comes from getting the car to that speed. This hybrid uses batteries from 0 to maybe 25 mph, at which point the gas engine kicks in. Batteries are recharged by the gas engine and from recycling energy gained braking. The control mechanisms are complex, but the net result is a car supposedly getting over 60 mpg, decent acceleration, and quite clean.

I know a little about this because I am the resident sceptic over on the Ballard Power thread. BLDPF has a market cap of $1.3 billion because of the hopes that, in about 7 years, its fuel cells might be used in a line of Mercedes Benz cars. I think that there is a good chance that gas/electric hybrids by then may be tough competitors.

I am actually very bullish on fuel cells, but for stationary power, not cars. The leader in that field is Energy Research (ERC on ASE) with a much more modest market cap of $70 million.

That's the whole point of this thread! Intelligent discourse helps me and others find mistakes. Thanks.

>> Ever hear of Ericsson

Yep, I have a friend that is a senior Exec over there. His biggest fear is Sony.

Got to run - I'll try to get back to some of your other points later.

This is indeed a factor. That's part of why I have the decline stopping at another 10% down rather than a full scale collapse below the long term trendline like some bears (4000 on the Dow). BWDIK.
