It takes an awful lot to bring one down.

Not really...a well shaped and placed charge does not need to be very big to take down an airliner....even rapid decompression of the cabin can lead to structural failure, not always of course....a small charge well shaped and placed could ignite the fuel tanks or take out the flight controls......

This last incident was a case where a worst case scenario was avoided because detonation failed.
