When I was a kid, you made a call by picking up the phone receiver. The operator would say "number please" and then connect the call for you. There was one operator who would always say "ok David" and I was amazed she always knew who I was.

I loved being at Grandma's, because they had one of those wall phones....We could listen to 8 different sets of conversations if no one was watching what we kids were doing. Never did get to hear much of anything, because the adults always had eyes in the back of their heads...<gg>
