I haven't ridden rail in the US in years and years. When I was a Fed and lived in DC, I took the train every now and then to either Philadelphia or Trenton. If I had to go to Newark, I'd fly.

I really enjoyed the rail experience in Italy last spring. The trains run frequently and go to a lot of places you might want to go. I never even had to use a ticket agent to buy a ticket. Used the automated kiosks and never had a problem. Going from Florence to Milan, I held my GPS up to the window and it had us clocked at 120 mph.
