'age better' does make some assumptions {all things being equal) that the storage environment is ideal, and that the wine is a quality one, and further that the year, harvest etc... went well... so why do i say "age better" (as opposed to your chosen term "more slowly" here are my thoughts: 'age more slowly' i believe it is more connected to the specific quality of the wine.... if you have a bad vintage, no matter how you affect the environment around the wine, you basically have bad raw material and you cannot create miracles (notwithstanding jesus ability to convert... er.. water into wine -g) 'aging better' does assume that the primary raw material and conditions are ideal. so why would a larg(er) bottle aid into providing a better environment ? because the wine to air ratio. you have substantially larger quantity of wine (in this example double the wine) against basically the same amount to air exposure... and it is safe to say that enemy # 1 to wine is oxygen.... following this idea, the larger the bottle the better environment to age the wine. and yes... the above does assume that your cork (or whatever chosen method to seal the bottle) will be first class, and that it will last.... true... while 'storing it' presents a problem to the individual, transportation (i.e. from producer to end user) does achieve a better alternative since you are capable of transporting more wine "per trip" again... we assume that those interested in spending $6,000.- plus for wine, will be capable of handling even larger quantities. i would conclude (unless there is evidence to the contrary) that the sole reason of a lower price for a larger bottle is that the buyer is getting a break for buying a larger quantity of wine. in summary, the reasons for the larger bottles are: 1.- better aging environment 2.- easier to transport. (this could be a negative to store it if no allowance is made for the larger size bottle) 3.- in champagne bottles... to celebrate victories for formula one drivers. (or similar sporting events)
